Removal of gaseous and vaporous impurities from the surface, as well as from the volume of various structural elements at elevated temperatures in a vacuum is one of the most important operations in the production of electrovacuum products. The gases extracted during the degassing of the material can be in the form of an adsorbed layer on the surface, in microscopic cavities and pores, inside the metal in a dissolved state or in the form of a chemical compound.

The metal degassing process is determined by two main factors:

• the amount of gas dissolved in the metal, which depends on the nature of the metal and on the conditions of its processing;
• by diffusion, the rate of which depends both on the nature of the metal and dissolved gas, and on the temperature at which degassing is carried out.
